What an On-Rim Tire Change Means
An on-rim change is the simpler of the two. Your spare set of tires is already mounted on its own wheels, so the job is to lift the vehicle, remove each wheel assembly and bolt the other set in its place.
Because the tires never leave their rims, this is usually the quicker option. It is common for drivers who keep a dedicated set of winter wheels and a set of all-season or summer wheels.
What an Off-Rim Tire Change Involves
An off-rim change is needed when you have only one set of wheels. Each tire has to be broken down from the rim, removed, and the new or seasonal tire mounted on the same wheel before it goes back on the vehicle.
Off-rim work uses a tire mounting machine and generally includes balancing afterward, since a freshly mounted tire and wheel need to be balanced as a unit.
On-Rim vs. Off-Rim: Which Do You Need?
If you are not sure, the quickest way to tell is to look at the tires you have stored.
- Stored tires are attached to metal or alloy wheels: you need an on-rim change.
- Stored tires are loose, with no wheels inside: you need an off-rim change.
- You are buying new tires to go on your current wheels: off-rim, plus balancing.
- You are still unsure: send a photo or describe the tires when you book and we will confirm.
When Customers Book a Tire Change
Most tire changes happen around the seasons — putting winter tires on in the fall and switching back in the spring. Others are needed when a tire is worn out, damaged beyond repair, or when you bought a set of tires online and need them fitted.
How Our Mobile Tire Change Works
You submit a booking request with your vehicle and tire details. Our team contacts you to confirm the type of change, the timing and the location. On the day, the vehicle is lifted safely, wheels are removed and replaced, and lug nuts are tightened to the appropriate specification.
Why Choose a Mobile Tire Change
You do not have to load four tires into your car, drive to a shop and wait in a lobby. The work happens where your vehicle already is, so you can keep working from home or carry on with your day.
What to Prepare Before Booking
- Your vehicle's year, make and model.
- Whether your second set is on rims or off rims.
- Tire size, found on the tire sidewall (for example 225/65R17).
- Your wheel lock key, if your vehicle uses locking lug nuts.
- A flat, safe area with enough room around the vehicle.
